The Art of Lighting Your Home

Lighting is one the most powerful elements of any interior space. An appropriate light not only brightens up a space but also is directly responsible for, how one feels about a space. People always say that, “Every room has a story” I say, “Every room has a story that is narrated by the lighting.” The right lighting scheme can make a small space look large and light up the darked conner. But with all those numerous lighting options available in the market, how will one choose the perfect lighting for each space? The answer to this question lies in understanding the purpose of each space.

A living room, for example is often considered the heart of any home for the purpose it serves. Consider the lighting, to layered in this case, overhead ambient lights combined with warm accent lights like wall sconces and floor lamps, this will create a welcoming atmosphere. On the other hand, let us consider kitchens. Kitchen can be termed as a completely active zone where one needs precision. If one decides to add the same lighting as the living room in a kitchen the space here will not serve its purpose. Kitchens demand lights that are bright and task-oriented that compliment cooking and cleaning without compromising on aesthetics. Selecting a light fixture can be much more than how pretty it looks; it is about creating harmony. One needs to opt for right temperature of light as it plays a key role in setting the mood and functionality.

Let’s think beyond tube lights and bulbs:

Its 2025 and tube lights and blubs are far more outdated than you think. The very first step towards have a functional and a well illuminated space is to think beyond tube lights and bulbs. The biggest lighting mistake one can do is relying on one big overhead light that is bond to cast unusual harsh shadows.

The key to a well-lit room is knowing the 3 major layers of lights apart from direct lights:

    1. Ambient lights
    2. Task lights
    3. Accent lights

Ambient lighting is the foundational layer, providing general illumination for a room.

Task lighting is the next layer and is specifically designed to aid in activities that require focused light, such as reading, cooking, or working. Accent lighting, is where you can truly express your personal style.

As we humans must know that our space narrate a story when we allow them to do so. Lighting can change how a space is pursued. Like I say the same four walls can be calm, lively, intimate, or grand – depending on the choice of lights one makes. While making wise choices one can create homes that adapt to one’s unique needs while embracing a unique charm.
